I recently learned that my ex, who I dated for five years, has been in a secret relationship with someone else—someone close to both of us—for almost the entire time since we broke up. Astonishingly, my best friend has known all along and actively kept it from me, insisting she did it for my own good because she thought hearing the truth would wreck me while I was already struggling with depression and loneliness. She went so far as to cover up social media posts, lie about seeing them together, and even urge others in our friend group to avoid the topic around me. When I finally found out last weekend—from someone outside the group—I felt completely blindsided by both the ex and my friend. Now my emotions are all tangled up. Part of me understands my friend’s impulse; looking back, I was fragile for a long time after the breakup, and hearing that my ex moved on with someone we both knew would have devastated me. But I also feel betrayed and infantilized—like she saw me as too weak to handle the truth, and like I was living in some alternate reality everyone else shared behind my back. I keep replaying memories, unsure if anything people told me was real. My trust in my friend—arguably the closest person to me—has been cracked. Still, she’s the one who has always been there for me when I needed help, and I know she thought she was protecting me with the best intentions. I don’t know whether to confront her, let it go, or deal with it another way. If I call her out, I risk destroying the friendship that has given me so much. If I say nothing, I’m not sure I can ever totally trust her again. If I try to forgive without confronting, I worry I’m just swallowing my feelings. What would YOU do?
