I just found out that my best friend—someone I’ve trusted since childhood—has been hiding something major from me for years. Months ago, my partner and I went through a rough patch, but we worked things out. Yesterday, while going through old messages for another reason, I accidentally discovered that my partner seriously considered ending things much earlier, and my friend knew all about it. In fact, my friend had been covering for my partner, telling me half-truths during that shaky time, all because they didn’t want to hurt me or make me worry. At first, I was stunned. My friend finally admitted that they had wanted to protect me from unnecessary pain, and they honestly believed things would work themselves out (which they did—or so it seemed). But now I feel betrayed, wondering if I can trust either of them. On one hand, I appreciate that my friend tried to shield me, but it also makes me question if I’ve lived in a bubble, protected from hard truths. I keep thinking about all the conversations we had, how different things might have been if I’d known everything. Part of me wants to confront her and demand the truth from now on, but another part worries about damaging a friendship that’s been the backbone of my life. Alternatively, maybe I just let it go, accept her intentions, and try to move on. Or should I try to address it more gently—to set new boundaries, but without tearing apart our relationship over a complicated past? What would YOU do?
