I never thought I’d be in this kind of situation, but here I am, losing sleep every night. My closest friend told me, in confidence, that their partner hit them during an argument. They’re terrified but begged me not to do anything, saying it was a mistake and that they still love their partner. I felt my heart break as I listened. I wanted to scream or cry, but I tried just to be there—for support. They made me promise not to tell anyone else, not even their family. In the days since, I can’t stop thinking about it. On the one hand, I want to honor their trust, give them agency, and not do something that might push them away or worsen things. On the other, I keep thinking about what could happen—what if it gets worse, or next time there’s even more danger? I feel useless just watching them struggle, but I also know how much it would hurt them if I betrayed their confidence. I haven’t been able to look at their partner the same way. I’m nauseous every time we’re around them. No matter what I decide, someone is going to get hurt. I feel trapped between being a loyal friend and doing what might be right for their safety. What would YOU do?
