My Friend’s Secret Addiction Could Get Him Killed—Do I Step In?

Category: relationships • Theme: Loyalty to a Friend vs Responsibility for Their Safety

I found out last month that my best friend has secretly started using hard drugs again—a relapse after years clean. He broke down and told me in confidence, swearing me to secrecy, after I noticed bruises and missed calls. He swears he’s got things under control, but I can see he’s on a dangerous path: recently he didn’t show up to work, and he’s gotten distant with his family. He’s lost weight, and I’ve seen the fear in his eyes. He begged me not to tell anyone because he’d lose his job, his wife… maybe even custody of his kid. Every time I consider calling his wife or his older brother, I imagine how it might betray his trust forever—the one solid thing he has left. But I can’t shake the thought of what would happen if he overdosed, or if his little boy saw something he shouldn’t. I love my friend and want to respect our bond, but every day I’m afraid I might wake up to a call with terrible news. Do I keep trusting that he’ll get it together, or do I risk destroying his trust and intervening? What would YOU do?
