I recently had lunch with a close friend I've known for over a decade. She's always been private, but lately, I've noticed her becoming withdrawn. That afternoon, after a long silence, she told me her partner has become physically aggressive—there are bruises, she said, but begged me not to 'make things worse.' She swore me to secrecy and said she isn't ready for help, just that she needed someone to listen. My heart broke hearing her story, and now I can't sleep, constantly worrying about her safety. I want to honor her trust, and I know how important it is not to betray someone’s confidence—she was terrified even telling me. But I also can’t shake the fear that if I do nothing, her situation could get much worse, maybe even fatal. I’ve considered calling a helpline or her family, but she said if anyone else found out, she’d never forgive me. On the other hand, if I stay silent and something terrible happens, I don't know how I’d live with myself. I'm torn between supporting her on her terms and acting before it’s too late. What would YOU do?
