My Friends Are Excluding Me—Should I Confront Them?

Category: relationships • Theme: Honest Confrontation vs Self-Protection

I used to think my friend group was unbreakable. For years, we’d meet every week—game nights, birthday dinners, random coffee runs. Lately, though, I’ve sensed a shift. Plans started happening without me, inside jokes I didn’t get, photos of outings I wasn’t invited to popping up on social media. At first, I chalked it up to schedules—maybe I’d missed a text or two. But last week, I overheard two of them talking at work, mentioning how they liked things 'better with fewer people.' It stung. Then another mutual friend told me, gently, that I was being left out on purpose. She didn’t say why, just that the group thought it was 'easier.' I keep replaying moments in my mind—did I overshare? Was I too opinionated? I feel hurt, but mostly confused. Should I confront them and risk more rejection—or do I just let the friendship fade? Cutting ties feels impossibly lonely, but pretending nothing’s wrong makes me feel fake. I don’t want to be the desperate friend, nor do I want to carry silent resentment. Sometimes I wonder if I should just ask one person privately, but is that cowardly? I’ve spent nights crying, missing people who apparently don’t miss me back. I don’t want drama, but I also don’t want to waste my energy on one-sided friendships. What would YOU do?
