I’ve known my best friend for almost two decades. She recently started dating someone I used to know through a mutual acquaintance from college. Back then, he was charming but manipulative—I saw him twist stories to pit people against one another and even cheat on his then-girlfriend. He never did anything directly to me, but I watched how he made people feel unsafe and anxious around him. My friend has no idea about this past, and these days he presents himself as this attentive, caring person. She seems happier than she’s been in years, telling me all the cute things he does and how supportive he is. I worry so much, remembering the late-night phone calls I had with girls he made miserable. But what if he’s changed? Or—what if warning her ruins our friendship because she thinks I’m jealous or meddling? I keep rehearsing ways to bring it up, but the words sound judgy or desperate. At the same time, I feel sick thinking I might be letting someone I love walk straight into pain. Am I just projecting old drama, or ignoring real red flags out of fear? I don't want to abandon her, but I also don't want to overstep. What would YOU do?
