I’ve always looked up to our pastor. He’s been a guiding force in our small town, the kind of leader who volunteers at food drives, helps families in crisis, and remembers everyone’s birthdays. Last week, I went out of town for a conference, and at the hotel bar, I spotted him at a slot machine, looking anxious and furtive. Over the next couple nights, I saw him lose what looked like hundreds of dollars, drinking more than I’ve ever seen. He never saw me—I’m sure of that. Back home, it’s like nothing happened. He’s back to his perfect, reassuring self. But now, every sermon and handshake feels heavier. I know many in our community turn to him in difficult times, and some are struggling with debt or addiction themselves. I feel like I’m carrying this huge secret, and I keep thinking about all the people who trust him implicitly. At the same time, I know how much he’s helped my family over the years, and I can’t forget the look of misery on his face in that hotel lobby. I don’t want to destroy everything he’s built or hurt the people who rely on him. Part of me wonders if I should confront him privately, or just let it go—maybe everyone deserves a private flaw. But what if it gets worse, or others are already being hurt? What would YOU do?
