Do I Reveal What I Found About Our Candidate?

Category: society • Theme: Civic Duty vs Personal Risk

I stumbled across something I never expected. While helping clean out an office for a friend, I found a mistakenly discarded folder about our town’s favorite candidate for mayor—someone I’ve always admired. Inside were documents and a handwritten note implying they cut corners on a public project and tried to keep it quiet. The project hurt no one directly, but some rules were definitely bent, and if the news got out, it might tank the candidate’s campaign right before the election. I’m not a huge fan of the rival candidate, but I believe in fair elections. At the same time, it’s a small town. If I bring this to light, people might trace it back to me—our families know each other. There could be backlash or even threats, and I could lose friends I’ve had since childhood. But keeping quiet feels like letting something dishonest slide, especially when everyone’s always talking about integrity. I feel sick about it—I just wanted to help clean up some old supplies, not find myself with this kind of secret. I keep imagining how every possible choice plays out, and none of them leave me feeling okay. What would YOU do?
