I never expected to be in this position. A few nights ago, coming home late from my shift, I saw two officers stop a teenager near the bus station. At first, I thought it was a routine check, but things escalated quickly. One officer pushed the boy hard against the wall, shouting insults. The other slapped him, even as the kid was crying and trying to explain. I stood frozen in the shadows, torn between my fear and the urge to yell out. I filmed quietly on my phone until another pedestrian walked by, and the officers let the boy go. My heart raced the entire night, playing back that footage over and over. I showed the video to my husband, and he panicked. His own brother had some trouble years ago—being on the police’s bad side nearly wrecked our whole family. My husband begged me to delete the video, reminding me our kids need me and warning that reporting police in our small city could easily get back to us. But every time I look at my children, I imagine someone else’s mom feeling powerless if it was their kid. At the same time, the stories about whistleblowers being harassed or “visited” at home churn my stomach. I’m caught in the middle: if I report this, I could help the boy and maybe others, but I risk my family’s peace and maybe even our safety.
