I work as a part-time assistant for a local politician running for re-election. Last week, during a late shift, I accidentally discovered security camera footage from a locked office. The clip shows my boss’s main rival making a deal with a well-known developer—swapping favorable zoning for campaign donations. If this becomes public, the rival’s campaign could collapse, likely giving my boss the win. But I also know that leaking such footage is illegal—my job, and potentially my future, would be at risk. Worse, my own name would likely get out, and the developer has a reputation for intimidating people who cross them. The election is a week away. So far, the footage hasn’t been found by anyone else; if I delete it, it’s gone forever. I keep thinking of all the people in my town who are tired of this kind of corruption, who just want a fair choice. At the same time, I feel sick when I imagine being dragged into court, or having strangers harass my family because of this choice. I’ve barely slept, and even friends who hate politics have noticed I’ve been a wreck. Am I supposed to risk everything I have for what’s right?
