I never expected to find myself in the center of something this big. My job is pretty uneventful—I help manage records at the community center, handling things like invoices and event permits. Last week, while preparing paperwork for election volunteers, I came across a folder buried in an old email archive. It was packed with receipts that showed a city council candidate—someone everyone trusts—taking donations from a real estate developer, way over the legal limit, and failing to report them. The paperwork even hints at a deal to sell unused public land. If this went public, the candidate would almost certainly lose, and the election is less than a month away. I feel sick just thinking about it. On one hand, people should know the truth before voting. But this candidate is actually popular for a reason—they’ve brought jobs to our town, and a lot of people (including my own parents) are depending on their promises. If I leak this, our already divided community might just explode. I worry it will ruin not just their reputation, but trust in our institutions for years. The other candidate is inexperienced and has been involved in plenty of drama—honestly, I’m not sure they’d do any better. But if I stay silent, I’m helping hide corruption. I keep thinking: is it my place to be the one who decides what the town should know? I’m terrified that whatever I do, someone will get hurt. What would YOU do?
