I never thought I’d find myself here, terrified by something I saw just walking home from work. At first, I assumed he was resisting, but as I got closer, I realized he was on the ground, crying, with his hands up. One officer kept his knee on the boy’s back while the other shouted threats and racial slurs. There weren’t many people around, but I noticed one of the officers glanced up and caught me watching. I froze and hurried away, my heart pounding and guilt flooding in. What keeps me awake at night isn’t just what I saw—it’s that the officers recognized me. Our neighborhood’s small. My wife’s worried that if I say anything, these cops or their friends could retaliate. I’ve heard rumors of people being harassed or mysteriously ticketed after filing complaints. At the same time, I can’t stop thinking about the boy’s face or the fact that none of this will change if people like me stay silent. My parents lived through far worse in their country by never speaking out, and they always told me to keep my head down, but I also want my son to grow up in a place where people do the right thing.
