I never expected to find myself entangled in something so big. I work part-time for a local printing company, mostly helping with flyers and campaign mailers. Last week, a rush order for one of the mayoral candidates landed on my desk. Accidentally, a staffer left behind a thumb drive—they must’ve mixed it in with the design files. I shouldn’t have looked, but curiosity got the better of me. What I found was shocking: clear evidence that their campaign had coordinated with a third-party group in a way that violates election laws. There’s money being funneled, attack ads planned, the works. My first reaction was fear. I’m not a political person—I just make a living. But as I sat there, I couldn’t shake the thought that voters deserved to know what’s happening. If I kept quiet and this candidate won, would I be complicit? At the same time, exposing this could cost me my job. We get a lot of business from campaign season, and even whispering about leaks could ruin my reputation for confidentiality. Worse, I worry about retaliation—I’ve seen stories of whistleblowers losing everything. My boss has a family to support, and my coworkers rely on this place too. I’ve gone back and forth every night, imagining the news headlines, the consequences for the election, and whether I’d even be believed. Is it my place to step forward with evidence, even anonymously? Or should I stick to my role, shred the file, and keep my head down? Part of me wonders if there’s a way to warn someone without destroying my own life, or putting others at risk. I’m genuinely stuck. What would YOU do?
