I work as a junior staffer on a local political campaign—not for the main party, just someone trying to get their start. Recently, a volunteer handed me some internal documents they say are from the opposing candidate’s team. I opened them and at first just saw boring logistics, but then I stumbled on a thread about a controversial business deal the candidate was involved in years ago. The deal might not be strictly illegal, but it conflicts with the public image they’re selling, and if voters found out, it could absolutely swing our very close race. My supervisor told me to hand the documents over and let the higher-ups decide, but no one has contacted me in days and the election is only a week away. I keep rereading that discussion, thinking about how many people would be furious if they voted for someone under false pretenses. But I also know how ugly recent elections have become, how easily "dirt" gets twisted, and how even the hint of a scandal can ruin not just careers, but lives—including those of innocent family members. Plus, leaking this myself could put my own reputation and future jobs on the line, since no one knows where this info really came from. If I do nothing, am I complicit?
