I never thought something like this would happen to me. Last week, while driving home late, I saw flashing lights in a deserted parking lot. I almost didn’t stop, but I recognized the voices—local officers who’d gone to high school with my cousin. Hiding behind my car, I watched as they interrogated a teenage boy. They pushed him around, called him names, and threatened to plant something in his backpack. The whole thing was over in minutes, but I couldn’t shake the boy’s terrified face. Ever since, I’ve felt trapped. My brother’s had a few run-ins with the law, and people in my neighborhood know not to “make trouble.” Still, I keep replaying what I saw.
