I always looked up to a certain community leader—someone who’s helped revitalize our neighborhood and inspired so many, including me. About a week ago, I was on my usual evening walk when I saw them hunching beside a rundown public building, spray paint can in hand. At first, I thought it couldn’t be—but I caught the unmistakable graffiti tag that’s been popping up around our area, the one people complain about in meetings. Our leader didn’t see me. I was frozen, shocked. I kept thinking, maybe there’s some explanation, but the city had just spent money repainting that spot. The next day, everyone in the neighborhood group chat was furious about the new graffiti. I want to believe there was a reason—some kind of protest, art, or even a secret campaign—but each excuse feels flimsier the more I think. Reporting what I saw would devastate not only this person’s reputation, but also a lot of projects they’re involved in. I know they’ve done real good here.
