I’ve attended the same church for the last six years, and my pastor has become someone I deeply respect and rely on—not just for spiritual guidance, but as a friend. Last week, I stopped by a small casino outside town to drop off a fundraiser flyer, and unexpectedly saw my pastor sitting alone at a slot machine. He looked stressed, and I watched him pour bill after bill into the machine, almost desperate. He didn’t see me, and I left quickly, shaken and heartbroken. Since then, I haven’t been able to get the image out of my head. I keep wondering if this was a one-off thing, or if he has a gambling problem that no one knows about. I know how much people in our congregation depend on him—we’re a tight community, and he really has brought hope to so many struggling families. At the same time, his sermons often focus on responsibility, self-control, and setting a good example. Is it my place to say something? If I confront him privately, I put our friendship at risk and might force him to admit something painful. If I go public, it could destroy his reputation and fracture the community. But if I stay silent, I’m enabling a secret that might hurt more people in the end. I feel so torn and unsure—my trust feels broken, but I still care deeply for him and for everyone who looks up to him. What would YOU do?
