I have gone to the same church my entire life, and our pastor has always been a pillar of the community—compassionate, devoted, and someone everyone turns to in times of trouble. Last week, I went to the local pharmacy late at night to pick up medicine for my daughter. There was hardly anyone there. As I waited for my prescription, I saw our pastor in an unguarded moment at the other end of the store. He was nervously purchasing several bottles of hard liquor and one of the pharmacists quietly mentioned to him that this was his third late-night visit this week. The way he spoke, it sounded like a regular routine, not a one-time thing. I know our church community sees him as almost saintly, and I also know there are people relying on his support, especially those battling addiction themselves—he runs a support group, in fact. I keep thinking maybe he’s just going through a rough patch, but when I remember the faces in those support sessions, and his position as a moral example, I feel sick with guilt about staying quiet. But if I expose what I saw, he could lose everything—his job, his standing, maybe even his family. And I have no proof of anything beyond that one encounter except the pharmacist’s offhand comment.
