I grew up in a small town where everyone knows everyone, and for as long as I can remember, our pastor has been the bedrock of our community. People go to him for guidance, advice, and even financial help when times are tough. One evening, I stopped by a nearby city for a late dinner after visiting my aunt in the hospital. Passing by a small casino, I saw someone who looked familiar hunched over a slot machine, clearly deep in distress. To my shock, it was our pastor. He didn't see me, but I watched him go from machine to machine, frantically withdrawing money from the ATM. He looked exhausted and lost—nothing like the wise, calm leader we all count on. I felt a knot in my stomach watching him slip out the back exit, looking over his shoulder. Since then, I can't shake what I saw. I keep thinking about all the people who rely on him, financially and emotionally. What if his habit spirals out of control and he misuses church funds? Or worse, what if he’s already done so? Yet, I also know how much he means to this community and that everyone has private battles. There’s a real risk that exposing him would destroy his reputation, his family, and throw our church into chaos. Sometimes I think I should just talk to him privately, but I’m worried he might shut down or retaliate. Every time I see him at the pulpit, I feel anxious and guilty, like I’m keeping a huge secret from everyone else. I honestly don’t know if saying something would help or make things worse for everyone. What would YOU do?
