I volunteer at our small town’s community center, helping with local fundraisers. Last week, I stayed late to lock up because our maintenance guy was out sick. As I walked by the staff room, I saw the councilman—someone everyone praises for bringing life back to our neighborhood—stuffing envelopes of cash into his briefcase. These were donations meant for the free meal program. He didn’t see me, and I left as quietly as I could. Since then, he’s greeted me like nothing happened. He’s been a pillar in our town: he started the afterschool program, advocated for safer crosswalks, and helped nearly everyone I know at some point. If I report what I saw, it could end his career and disrupt a lot of good projects—maybe even shut down our center if people lose faith. But if I stay silent, the stealing will just continue and undermine everything we’re working for.
