I volunteer at our local food bank every weekend, and it’s honestly been one of the most fulfilling parts of my life. The director, whom everyone admires for his generosity and tireless work, is kind of a local hero here. Last Saturday, I had to drop off some paperwork after hours and ended up walking in on him and another staff member dumping sealed boxes of donated food into the trash. I just stood there, frozen. He saw me, and told me quietly that the food was technically edible but close to expiration, and it was 'safer' not to give it out, even though our policies usually say we can. He asked me not to mention it, saying he didn’t want rumors of 'spoiled food' scaring families away. But some of the food looked totally fine—cans, dry goods, things I knew some recipients would be grateful for. Since then, I can’t stop thinking about all those families lining up outside, counting on every bit of help. But if I go public or challenge the director, I could destroy his reputation, maybe even risk the food bank losing donors or shutting down. If I say nothing, am I letting waste continue while families go hungry? I feel completely torn and I haven’t slept well since. What would YOU do?
