I’ve always admired our local pastor—he’s been the backbone of our community for as long as I can remember. People trust him with their secrets, ask him for help when times are tough, and he never seems to judge anyone. Last Saturday night, I was heading home late after my shift and took a shortcut behind the church. That’s when I saw the pastor stumble out of his car, almost tripping over the curb. Before he got in, he checked to see if anyone was around and swigged from a half-empty bottle hidden in a paper bag. He started the engine and drove away, clearly not in any condition to be behind the wheel. My heart dropped. I froze, unsure if I should intervene, but he was gone before I could do anything. Since then, I can’t get the image out of my head. I feel sick every time I see him reading scripture or advising parents and kids alike. What if he hurts someone next time? But then I think about what coming forward would mean. The community is deeply tight-knit; people look up to him. If I say something, it could rip our town apart, destroy the trust so many people rely on, and lead to gossip and anger pointed at me, too. On the other hand, saying nothing means risking someone’s safety and feeling complicit every time he drives away from church. I even considered speaking privately with him, but I’m afraid he’ll deny it or retaliate subtly. I genuinely don’t know what’s right. What would YOU do?
