I’ve always admired our pastor—he’s led our small town church for decades and is the backbone of nearly every local fundraiser. Last week, I was at the church office helping organize receipts for our annual food drive when I saw some paperwork he left on the printer. Out of habit, I stacked the papers, but one caught my eye: there were large withdrawals from the church charity fund, marked as “personal entertainment.” I’d never even thought to question his integrity before, but the numbers stuck with me for days. After wrestling with guilt, I quietly cross-checked other recent expenses—it wasn’t a one-off. I feel sick. So many people in our community rely on those donations, and I know some of them personally. But at the same time, this pastor has guided people through tragedies, kept families from homelessness, and even helped my own sister through her worst depression. If I go public or even bring it to the board, I’m terrified it’ll cause a huge scandal and break our town’s trust. Some folks would be devastated, maybe even lose faith altogether, especially since we’ve all rallied around him for so long. I could confront him privately, but I honestly don’t know how he’d react. Part of me is desperate to let this go—maybe he had some legitimate reason I don’t understand? Or maybe I’m just scared to face the blowback. It feels like no matter what I do, someone will get hurt or lose something precious. I have never felt this torn in my life. What would YOU do?
