I never thought my walk home from work would land me at the center of something so complicated. Last month, I witnessed a heated argument that suddenly turned physical outside a local business. At the time, it was chaotic—people shouting, phones out recording, one person bleeding and another being dragged away. I gave my contact information to the police, but didn’t want to get further involved. Now, a journalist reached out after learning I’d witnessed everything, asking for my testimony to bring truth to the community. The article could shine a light on a pattern of violence brewing in our area and possibly push for change. But the business owner’s lawyer already hinted to me that speaking out—especially to the press—could put me at risk of a defamation lawsuit. I can’t afford to be dragged through court; I have two small kids and just started rebuilding financially after a divorce. Still, I keep thinking of the victim I saw on the ground, and how my words could make people safer. I feel trapped between responsibility and fear—does my duty to society outweigh risking my family’s stability? What would YOU do?
