I work in a small medical office and recently, a well-known local politician—one of the two main candidates in our upcoming city election—came in for a consultation. Their visit seemed routine until I overheard a conversation confirming that this candidate has an advanced but manageable neurological disorder. It isn’t immediately life-threatening, but it could impact their decision-making abilities in stressful situations. The candidate’s family and campaign team clearly want to keep this condition private, but the diagnosis isn’t publicly known. I know many people who are undecided about their vote, and I can’t help but feel that if this information came out, it could swing the election. I support some of the values this candidate stands for, but I also believe in transparency, especially from public figures. At the same time, the thought of violating their privacy, potentially ruining their career and exposing their family to public scrutiny, makes me feel sick. I didn’t intend to overhear any confidential details, but now I don’t know what to do. If I say nothing, am I complicit in hiding a serious condition? If I speak up, am I betraying someone’s right to keep their health private? I genuinely feel lost, torn between what’s best for the community and what’s right for this individual. What would YOU do?
