I stumbled onto something I never meant to find. My job involves handling communications between local politicians and community orgs. Last week, while working late, I was sent a batch of audio files to organize. Among them was a recording of one candidate—front-runner, actually—talking on a private call. I shouldn’t have listened, but curiosity got me. On the tape, she makes offhand jokes about volunteers and says things that, taken out of context, sound cruel and manipulative. I’m pretty sure she thought the recording wasn’t rolling. This wasn’t criminal or anything, but it’s the kind of thing that could really change how people see her. I’ve been supporting her campaign quietly, but this shook me. I keep thinking: if people knew, would it change their minds? But everyone has moments they’re not proud of. And if I leak this, it could ruin her, and put my own job and reputation on the line—I’d be easy to trace. At the same time, I know some local news outlets would jump at this. I tried to hint to her team that their behavior might matter, but I’m not sure it landed. I feel caught between wanting the election to be fair, and not wanting to destroy a person’s career over a few bad minutes she never thought would go public.
