Should I Leak Proof of a Local Candidate’s Dirty Tactics?

Category: society • Theme: Personal Risk vs Civic Responsibility

I never thought I’d find myself in the middle of an election scandal, but here I am. I work part-time at a local print shop—nothing glamorous, but it keeps me busy during grad school. One afternoon, a staffer from a council candidate’s campaign rushed in, stressed and in a hurry. Their USB drive jammed in our computer, and they begged for help. When I opened it to troubleshoot, a folder popped up with files labeled 'Rumors', 'Fake Socials', and 'Opposition Tactics.' My curiosity got the better of me, so I quickly peeked at a document. It detailed a plan to create fake social media accounts to spread lies about the opposing candidate. I felt sick. The problem is, this candidate is the clear front-runner. My community is already split down the middle, and things have gotten ugly this election cycle. I know if I take this to the local paper or post it online, there’s a real possibility I could be dragged into a nasty, public battle. I fear for my safety, my job, and even my standing in the university—I saw what happened to the last person who got involved in town 'politics'. But how can I sit back and pretend I know nothing, letting lies decide this election? On the other hand, maybe it's not my fight, and who knows what fallout my actions could unleash. I feel paralyzed, staring at this flash drive, wondering if staying silent makes me complicit… or just smart. What would YOU do?
