I never wanted to be in the middle of politics, but here I am. A few weeks ago, I accidentally received a video file meant for my coworker—a short, grainy clip that clearly shows a local mayoral candidate accepting an envelope of cash at what looks like a restaurant backroom. The candidate is running on an anti-corruption platform, and the election is insanely close. I know for a fact that posting this video could completely change who wins, and I haven't seen this anywhere else—no news, no rumors, nothing. Here’s the thing: the candidate has a devoted, aggressive following. In the past, I've seen people harassed and doxed for even minor criticism online. Just sharing the video, even anonymously, would put me and probably my workplace in the crosshairs. My inbox would blow up. People could try to figure out who leaked it. But, if I keep quiet, nobody else will know about this. The election could go to someone who’s lying to everyone’s face, and the city might suffer for years because of it. I’m constantly anxious. If I release the video, will I ever feel safe again? If I don't, am I just willfully letting a fraud happen? I’ve barely slept, trying to justify either choice. I keep picturing the look in my parents’ eyes if they see me on the news, wrapped up in this. But I also keep picturing the city—my city—tied to a corrupt leader because no one spoke up when they had the chance. What would YOU do?
