I always admired our mayor, someone who's done a lot for our town—improving the park, setting up food banks, even remembering people’s birthdays. Last weekend, I was out for a late walk and, by sheer accident, saw them behind one of the closed storefronts, spray-painting slurs on a wall. I froze, totally shocked. By the time I gathered my wits, they’d vanished into the night. Ever since, I can’t sleep well—people in town genuinely look up to the mayor, and their reputation has brought resources and a sense of safety to our struggling community. But now, I know for a fact they harbor hate, and that sick fear is eating away at me. Part of me wants to report what I saw, maybe even tell local media or get the police involved. But then, I keep thinking: what if I’m not believed, or worse, the town’s unity just shatters? Businesses might pull funding, people could lose trust in one another, especially those targeted by the slur. On the other hand, if I say nothing, am I complicit in letting that person continue influencing our lives? I can’t shake the feeling of betrayal—and guilt. I wish there were a clear right answer, but everything feels risky and heavy. Some friends tell me to confront the mayor in private, but I worry I’d just get brushed off, or be targeted myself.
