Should I Share What I Saw at the Protest — Even If I’m at Risk?

Category: society • Theme: Civic Honesty vs Personal Safety

I never expected to be in this situation. Last month, I happened to witness a heated confrontation at a community protest downtown. I wasn't involved—I was just heading home when things escalated. I clearly saw a local official rough-handling a protester right before the crowd got out of control. The incident made the news, but the details have been vague, and no one official has taken responsibility yet. Yesterday, a journalist reached out to me through a mutual friend, knowing I'd been there. She wants my testimony for a story that could finally set the record straight. But my hands are shaking as I write this. Several protestors have already received intimidating letters threatening legal action for 'defamation' after speaking to the press. My job is contract-based and somewhat public-facing; I worry that if my name gets dragged into this, I might face a lawsuit for slander, lose future work, or even deal with online harassment. At the same time, I keep thinking about the protester, about how the whole story still isn't out, and about the weight of what I saw versus my own safety. There’s also the fact that if people stay silent, nothing will ever change. Is my responsibility to the truth, or to protecting myself? I feel utterly torn, and sleepless. What would YOU do?
