Should I Speak to the Reporter About the Protest Incident?

Category: society • Theme: Personal Safety vs Civic Responsibility

I never expected to be in the middle of something like this. Last month, there was a tense protest in my town. I was only passing by to pick up groceries when I witnessed an altercation between a protester and a security guard that quickly escalated. The next day, news broke everywhere about the event, but with wildly different accounts—some making the protesters look violent, others blaming security. Now, a journalist has tracked me down (apparently someone spotted me on a phone video nearby) and is asking for my eyewitness account. I know what I saw could clarify what really happened, and part of me feels I have a responsibility to set the record straight—for the sake of those being unfairly blamed. But I’m terrified. Sharing my testimony publicly could stir up unwanted attention; what if someone decides to come after me—legally or even physically—if they don’t like what I say? I have a family to think about. I’m not an activist. I just happened to be there. The journalist promises I could remain anonymous, but I grew up in this town and nothing truly stays secret for long. On the other hand, if I stay silent, I’ll know the truth is being twisted, and I’ll be leaving the innocent to face consequences alone. I keep replaying that afternoon in my mind, feeling guilt and fear swirl inside me. I need to decide soon—do I risk myself by speaking out, or look the other way and hope it all works out? What would YOU do?
