Should I Testify About That Night on the Subway?

Category: society • Theme: Public Interest vs Personal Risk

I never thought a late commute could put me in this position. Two months ago, I was on a nearly empty subway car when I witnessed a scuffle between some young men and a transit security officer. It escalated quickly, but I saw enough to tell things didn’t happen the way the news first reported. I tried to blend in and get off at my stop, but the whole thing stuck with me. Last week, a journalist tracked me down—she’d heard I was a bystander and asked if I’d provide a statement for her exposé on the incident. She says more people could come forward if I speak first, but she warned me: if my identity is made public, one of the families involved could potentially sue me for defamation, or at the very least make my life difficult. I have kids, rent, and not much savings. My words could really matter for the truth, but I’m terrified of getting entangled in legal trouble or public backlash—especially since I’d have to contradict both the transit authorities and the family of one of the parties involved. If I say nothing, the official story becomes the only story. If I speak, I could lose so much, and there’s no guarantee it would even make a difference. I keep replaying what I saw, and maybe that’s selfish, but I just keep worrying about my own safety. What would YOU do?
