Do I Expose a Major Platform’s Security Flaw?

Category: technology • Theme: Public Safety vs Personal Risk

I recently discovered a pretty major security flaw in an extremely popular social media platform—it’s one of those bugs that could let someone access a ton of private user data if exploited carefully. I stumbled on it while poking around for a side project, not as a professional security researcher, and honestly, I’m terrified. I reported smaller bugs before through official channels and barely got a thank-you. This is the kind of thing that, if it went public, would make news and probably get their engineering team in trouble. But if I quietly report it, I fear they’ll brush it under the rug and never warn users. I don’t want to get sued—or worse, targeted—but I’d also be sick if people's info got leaked because I did nothing. I’ve already lost sleep over this. I keep thinking about all those users who trust the platform, and I feel huge guilt, but I also have student debt and a family to support. What if I attract legal heat or get blacklisted in tech? Would blowing the whistle anonymously even do anything, or could it put me at risk anyway? I just can’t figure out what I’m responsible for here, or how much I’m risking. What would YOU do?
