My Boss Is Spying On Us With Our Work Devices—Should I Speak Up?

Category: technology • Theme: Job Security vs Moral Responsibility

I work as a mid-level analyst at a mid-sized tech company and last week, while running some updates on my company laptop, I stumbled on software I didn't recognize. Out of curiosity, I did some digging and realized it’s a tracking program quietly recording everything employees do: every website, every keystroke—even screenshots from our work webcams! I was shocked. No one ever told us about this. I’ve always felt like our office culture was open and trusting, but now I feel paranoid every time I sit down at my laptop. I don’t know if it’s even legal, or if management is aware that we’re being watched this closely. Part of me feels outraged at the invasion of privacy—some of my coworkers talk about personal stuff during breaks or work late at home with their kids in the background. But I worked hard to get this job and I rely on the paycheck. If I say something to HR or try to confront my boss, I might be risking my own position, and nothing might change anyway. What if they retaliate or just say I’m being paranoid? On the other hand, if I stay quiet, am I just helping them get away with it? I care about the people I work with—some of whom have become close friends. I feel guilty for knowing their private moments might be watched and not doing anything about it. At the same time, I don’t want to jeopardize my own security or future here. So, do I keep my head down and protect myself, blow the whistle, or try talking privately to my manager first? What would YOU do?
