My Company Is Spying on Staff—Should I Blow the Whistle?

Category: technology • Theme: Job Security vs Workplace Privacy

I work in IT at a medium-sized company, and last week, while updating some servers, I stumbled on a hidden folder filled with logs from what looked like a new monitoring tool. I realized that management has been secretly installing software on employees’ laptops to track web activity, keystrokes, even Slack messages—none of which anyone has been told about. My stomach dropped as I pieced together just how invasive it is. I feel sick thinking about my coworkers, especially since some of them occasionally vent about work or manage personal stuff over lunch breaks. I confronted my supervisor, who told me to keep quiet and focus on my job. Since then, I can barely look some teammates in the eye, because it feels like I’m part of the deception. But I need this job—my partner and I just bought a house, and finding work in this town isn’t easy. Exposing the company could mean losing everything I’ve worked for, but staying silent feels cowardly, like I’m betraying people who trust me. Maybe there’s a middle ground, but I don’t know what that looks like yet. I keep thinking about how I’d feel if it were me being watched without my consent. The guilt is eating at me, but so is the fear. What would YOU do?
