I work as the tech coordinator at a large high school, and for months I’d been testing a new AI security system designed to spot threats before they happened. Last week, the AI flagged a student for unusual online activity, and it turned out he was researching weapons and expressing violent thoughts. The school intervened, and it turned out he was in real crisis. Thanks to the early warning, we connected him with the help he needed—and possibly prevented something horrible. But afterward, some teachers and even students found out how the AI worked. They were furious; they hadn’t realized how much of our students’ private messages, searches, and even real-time chats it was monitoring. Now there’s huge debate. Parents are demanding to know what else the AI is watching. Some students say they feel completely betrayed, and a couple have even deleted their accounts. The principal wants me to help defend the system at the upcoming PTA meeting, but I’m wrestling with guilt. Did we go too far? Was it worth risking everyone’s trust for safety, or have we crossed a line that can’t be uncrossed?
