I work in the IT department of a mid-sized company. Last week, while troubleshooting some network issues late at night, I accidentally stumbled on a hidden dashboard. It tracks every employee’s emails, website visits, even keystrokes—including my own. I knew the company had some monitoring, but this was way beyond what anyone had been told. People joke about 'Big Brother' at work, but they genuinely don’t know the extent of it. My boss is the only one with access to this tool, and I remember him making casual comments lately that seemed too coincidentally specific. My coworkers use their computers for everything from checking on their kids’ daycare to venting about stressful projects. If they knew, they’d feel sick, betrayed, maybe even violated. But I’m terrified of what might happen if I speak up. Non-disclosure agreements are iron-clad here, and I could instantly lose my job. Finding another tech job at my age would be tough, especially if I got blacklisted. Part of me wants to confront my boss directly—ask why no one was told, see if it can be scaled back. But I don’t know how to even start that conversation without risking everything. Another option I keep thinking about is anonymously tipping off my coworkers, but that could start a firestorm I might not be able to control, and they could guess it was me. Or maybe I should just keep my head down, keep my job, and pretend I never saw it—even if doing so makes me lose respect for myself. I honestly don’t know what the right thing is anymore. What would YOU do?
