Should I Expose My Company’s Hidden Employee Tracking?

Category: technology • Theme: Personal Privacy vs Job Security

I work in HR for a midsize tech company. Last week, while prepping for an internal audit, I stumbled upon a folder buried in our server. It contained detailed logs of employees’ computer activity—every website visited, file accessed, even keystrokes and screenshots. What really alarmed me was that this data was being collected secretly, without employee consent or any disclosure in company policy. I confronted my manager, who just shrugged it off and said it was necessary for 'maximizing productivity.' I can’t stop thinking about how much trust employees place in us, and how betrayed they would feel if they knew. At the same time, I’m not some crusader—I have a mortgage, bills, and I need this job. If I speak up to upper management or go public, there’s a real chance I’d be fired or even taken to court for leaking sensitive company data. But if I stay silent, I’m complicit in this violation of privacy. I’ve even caught myself hesitating before talking with coworkers, worried I’m being watched too. Every day I go to work, I feel the pressure mounting. I want to do right by my colleagues, but I’m terrified of risking everything I’ve built. What would YOU do?
