I’ve worked in tech support at my company for almost five years. Last week, while troubleshooting an issue with a company server after hours, I came across a hidden dashboard. At first I thought it was a system monitoring tool, but looking closer, I realized it’s actually tracking everything employees do: emails, files opened, even keystrokes and private chats. There’s no mention of this in any policy, and none of us were told. Part of me is shocked—I always thought my company respected our privacy. But part of me isn’t surprised, knowing how competitive things have been lately with all the layoffs. Since making the discovery, I haven’t slept right. I keep thinking about my coworkers—some with medical appointments, others dealing with family crises, typing private messages thinking they were safe. I worry someone could get fired or even blackmailed if this data falls into the wrong hands. But if I speak up, I risk my job. I have bills to pay, a mortgage, and I support my mother who’s recovering from surgery. I wonder if the company could sue me for ‘data theft’ just for noticing the dashboard. I want to do the right thing, but I’m terrified of what it’ll cost—not just to me, but maybe to everyone if this becomes public. At the same time, every day I pretend nothing’s wrong feels like I’m betraying my friends. I keep replaying different scenarios, and I honestly have no idea which path is right. What would YOU do?
