I stumbled onto something huge at work. I’m a junior developer at a company that makes a really popular app—think tens of millions of downloads. After an all-nighter trying to track down a bug, I realized our next update has a hole that could let someone crash every phone using the app. It sounds surreal, but with a crafted message, anyone could make millions of phones freeze or even brick. I took it to my lead, but he dismissed it, saying a fix would delay a major launch and we’d all get reamed for missing deadlines. He told me to keep quiet and just push the update as is. Now I can’t stop thinking about everyone who could get burned—students, parents, small businesses keeping records on their phones. But if I go above my boss, I risk my job and maybe my career.
