I work as a mid-level developer at a rapidly growing tech company. For months, I’ve been part of a team building a software platform that can monitor employees’ activities on their work devices—tracking keystrokes, capturing screenshots, even flagging 'suspicious behavior'. At first, I thought it was for cybersecurity, but recently I learned the main client is planning to use it as a productivity tool, monitoring remote workers without their explicit consent. When I questioned my manager, he brushed off my concerns, saying it’s 'standard industry practice' and that I’m just there to code, not to set policy. But it's gnawing at me. Part of my job is to oversee the deployment. If I raise a fuss now, I risk being labeled a troublemaker—or even getting fired. On the other hand, if I just keep my head down and deploy it, I feel like I’m betraying my values.
