I’ve been working as a software engineer for almost twelve years. Recently, my company developed a new AI-powered tool that can automate a lot of the manual work done by our support staff. On paper, it’s an engineering marvel – I’m actually proud of the technical achievement. But as I got deeper into testing, it hit me how many positions this tool could make redundant, including people I eat lunch with every day. There’s no formal announcement, but management keeps asking when we can 'go live.' I’ve even heard some rumors about upcoming 'restructuring.' Technically, I haven’t been asked to lie or hide anything. There’s no legal red flag. But I know launching this will likely lead to layoffs – and I’d basically be pulling the trigger. These aren’t nameless employees; some are single parents or nearing retirement, and we’ve genuinely become friends. At the same time, my boss is excited, and I know the higher-ups see this as the future. If I refuse, I risk my own job, and maybe even my reputation as a team player.
