Should I Refuse to Launch My Company’s AI Tool?

Category: technology • Theme: Professional Duty vs Personal Ethics

I work as a senior software engineer at a mid-size tech company, mostly on the backend side of things. About six months ago, we began building an AI-powered analytics tool for our business clients. At first, it seemed impressive—automation, predictive data, personalized suggestions. But in the last sprint, I realized something disturbing: the tool profiles end users far more invasively than our privacy docs let on. Our code aggregates private behavioral patterns that, in the wrong hands, could easily be abused by clients to discriminate or even manipulate. I flagged this, but my manager waved me off. Our CTO is pushing hard for a release, promising that 'real market data' will help 'calibrate' for fairness. Privately, two other engineers told me they’re worried too, but fear speaking up. Now the launch deadline is next week, and I’m supposed to finalize the deployment pipeline. Every day, I feel more nauseous—I can’t shake the idea that I’m responsible if this tool harms even a handful of people. But if I speak up louder or stall, it could tank my standing here, maybe even cost my job. My family depends on my income, and the dev scene is tight right now. Part of me wants to believe I’m overreacting, but the risk feels real. I keep replaying what could happen if this tool is misused—and the looks on my family’s faces if I lose my job over 'causing trouble.' I honestly don't know what integrity demands here. What would YOU do?
