I work as a freelance developer and I recently discovered a serious security flaw in one of the largest social media platforms—think hundreds of millions of users. The bug lets anyone access private messages with a relatively simple trick. Part of me feels sick just thinking about all the people who could have their secrets exposed, relationships ruined, maybe even worse. On the other hand, I’m terrified. I don’t have connections at this company, and I’ve read horror stories about people who tried to report bugs and got ignored, dismissed, or even threatened with lawsuits. Worse, I’m pretty sure their terms of service technically make exploring vulnerabilities a violation. If I reveal what I found, I could lose my ability to work in tech, or even get sued. But if I do nothing, innocent people are at risk. I could try to report it anonymously, but then I worry it won’t be taken seriously – or maybe they’ll just quietly patch it, leaving others who find it free to exploit it.
