Do I Expose My Colleague Who Stole My Idea?

Category: work • Theme: Career Advancement vs Workplace Harmony

I was so excited about the proposal I spent weeks developing for our company’s annual innovation pitch. It was my first big chance to show what I could do, and I’d been pulling late nights—researching, outlining, tweaking every detail. I casually mentioned one of my key ideas to a colleague during coffee, not thinking much of it. A week later, our manager gathered us—my colleague announced a ‘great new solution’… and described my exact concept almost word-for-word. She’d put my idea in her own presentation deck, just with a new name. At first, I was stunned. I tried to tell myself maybe it was a misunderstanding, but I found time-stamped drafts and emails that clearly proved the idea was mine, dated before our conversation. Now the team is congratulating her, and our boss even mentioned a possible promotion in her future. Part of me wants to confront her, or go to our boss with my proof, but I worry it would start a war in the office, make me look petty, or backfire on my own reputation. On the other hand, keeping quiet just feels so unfair—this was my shot. There’s also the option of bringing it up privately with my colleague and seeing if she’ll come clean. But I have no idea how she’ll react—or if I could ever trust her again. I’m honestly hurt and angry, but also scared to put my neck out. What would YOU do?
