I work as an analyst at a mid-sized company. Last Friday, right before a big client meeting, my boss pulled me aside and told me to ‘round up’ some numbers in our quarterly report. It wasn’t a huge difference, but enough to make our results look a lot better than they actually are. She said it was standard practice, that everyone at her level did it, and that if I wanted to keep moving up, I needed to show I could be a ‘team player’. I’ve never had to do anything like this before. I went home that night feeling sick, replaying the conversation in my head over and over. On one hand, I really need this job—my partner is out of work, and if I make waves right now, we could both be unemployed. On the other hand, I keep thinking about what might happen if this ‘little’ change is discovered. Not to mention, it just feels wrong. Since then, the office feels different—my boss keeps asking if I’ve finished the report and giving me pointed stares. I feel like if I refuse or even question her, my career here is basically over. I also don’t want to ruin things for the friends I’ve made here if this escalates. But every time I start to edit the report, I feel guilty and start doubting myself.
