Dream Promotion or Abandon My Stressed-Out Team?

Category: work • Theme: Personal Ambition vs Team Loyalty

I’ve worked at my tech company for five years, starting as an intern and slowly building a team I’m ridiculously proud of. Last week, I was offered a huge promotion at a rival firm—double the salary, remote flexibility, and a chance to lead my own division. It’s everything I’ve worked for and honestly, it feels tailor-made for me. But here’s the gut punch: my current team is in the middle of a high-stakes product launch. We’re understaffed, two people are out on medical leave, and all eyes are on me to hold things together. We’ve pulled late nights, laughed and stressed together, and I know I’m a big part of why they’ve stayed motivated through chaos. If I leave now, my absence could completely derail the project. Morale is already shaky. I keep picturing my closest work friend, who told me last week, "Don’t you dare quit now—we need you." I’d be walking away from them at their most vulnerable moment. I feel torn between finally leveling up my career and not abandoning the people who’ve become family. I’ve dreamed of something like this for years, but the thought of letting everyone down presses on my chest. If I stay, I risk missing a rare, possibly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If I go, I’ll feel like a coward who bailed when things got hard. Is chasing my dream worth the cost to people who counted on me? What would YOU do?
