I’ve worked my way up at my current company for almost four years, starting as a junior analyst and eventually gaining the trust of my entire team. We’ve been through a lot together—layoffs, ridiculous deadlines, a merger last year that nearly unraveled everything. I’ve always been the stabilizer, the person everyone leans on when chaos hits. Two weeks ago, right after our manager left unexpectedly, I was promoted to interim team lead. Morale was shaky, but I doubled down and promised everyone we’d get through the next big project together. Then, out of nowhere, I got an offer for my absolute dream job. It’s at a company I’ve admired for years, doing work I’m actually passionate about, with a huge leap in pay and a chance to work with some of the best in the field. But the catch is: they want me to start in two weeks. No possibility to delay, no exceptions. The problem is, my current team is about to enter the hardest phase of a critical project—one we’ve all poured our hearts into and which will decide the fate of several people’s jobs if we succeed or fail. I know that if I leave now, it would leave them scrambling, leaderless, and possibly sabotaging our only chance to push the project over the finish line. At the same time, I know offers like this almost never come around. I feel torn between my loyalty to my team and my own long-term dreams.
