I’m in a position I never imagined. My coworker, who sits right across from me, is about to be let go for a mistake I know she didn’t make. I overheard enough from management to figure out they’re blaming her for some missing inventory, but I saw with my own eyes it was a shipment error—something the warehouse logged wrong, not her fault at all. The problem is, if I speak up, I’m worried I’ll put a target on my back. I’m not exactly in my boss’s good graces these days after a recent disagreement, and sticking my neck out could make me next on the chopping block, especially since layoffs are rumored this quarter. To make it worse, I found out by accident—no one knows I know, and the only evidence I have is my own word against a manager’s signature on a report. If I stay silent, my coworker loses her job unfairly, and I have to live with that guilt. If I speak up, I might end up unemployed, and I really need this job to help support my family right now. I’ve thought about just slipping her a warning, but that feels dishonest and might not help anyway. I haven’t slept well in days, watching her stress out, knowing what’s coming. She trusts me, and we’ve always looked out for each other. I feel sick that loyalty to her might cost me everything, while staying silent means I’m just letting something wrong happen. What would YOU do?
